Folders and Labels
As your log grows, folders and labels help you find contacts quickly. Folders give you a hierarchical file-system-style structure. Labels let you tag contacts across folders for cross-cutting categorization.
Folders
Folders organize your contacts into a tree structure -- just like directories on your computer. Every account starts with a Master Log root folder that contains all contacts by default.
Creating a folder
- Open the Log tab.
- Click the New Folder button in the folder sidebar.
- Enter a name (e.g., "Field Day 2025" or "POTA Activations").
- Choose a parent folder. Select Master Log to create a top-level folder, or nest it inside another folder.
- Click Create.
Organizing contacts into folders
- During manual logging: Choose a destination folder in the QSO form before saving.
- During import: Each import flow (ADIF, CSV, Cabrillo) lets you select a destination folder. Hamtrax suggests creating a child folder named after the file or contest.
- After the fact: Open a contact, change its folder assignment, and save.
Folder operations
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Rename | Right-click (or long-press) a folder and select Rename. |
| Move | Drag a folder to a new parent, or use the Move option in the context menu. |
| Delete | Right-click and select Delete. Contacts inside the folder are not deleted -- they move back to the Master Log. |
Use folders for time-bound or event-bound groupings: a specific contest, a field day, a vacation DXpedition, or a POTA activation trip. This keeps your Master Log uncluttered while preserving easy access to everything.
Example folder structure

Labels
Labels are lightweight tags you attach to contacts for quick filtering. Unlike folders (which are hierarchical and exclusive -- a contact lives in one folder), labels are flat and additive -- a single contact can have multiple labels.
Creating a label
- Open the Log tab.
- Navigate to the Labels section.
- Click New Label and give it a name (e.g., "QSL Sent", "Confirmed", "Needs Follow-up").
Assigning labels to contacts
- Open a contact and select one or more labels from the Labels dropdown.
- Labels are saved immediately and sync to the cloud.
Filtering by label
Use the filter panel in the Log tab to show only contacts with a specific label. This is useful for workflows like:
- Viewing all contacts where QSL has been sent but not yet confirmed.
- Finding contacts that need follow-up.
- Marking and revisiting interesting DX contacts.
Labels work across folders. You can filter by a label and see matching contacts from every folder in your log.
Folders vs. labels: when to use which
| Scenario | Use |
|---|---|
| Grouping contacts from a single contest or activation | Folder |
| Tracking QSL confirmation status across your entire log | Label |
| Separating portable vs. home station contacts | Folder |
| Flagging contacts for follow-up regardless of where they are filed | Label |
| Organizing an import from another logger | Folder (created automatically during import) |
You can combine both. Put your Field Day contacts in a "Field Day 2025" folder, then label individual contacts as "Confirmed" or "QSL Sent" for tracking.
